Unfortunately, this is true, Mr. Schäuble! You are right in your assessment, which is also my bitter conclusion. The “democratically” (thanks to clientele politics) elected Greek governments over the last three decades have not governed our country wisely, prudently and incorruptibly, and as a result they drove us to bankruptcy, the tragedy we are experiencing today...
Furthermore, the governments of the last 2 years, i.e. since Greece ceded sovereignty to Eurozone and IMF in order to be “saved”, have proven to be more impotent and irresponsible than all previous ones.
Nevertheless, Mr. Schäuble, as the Chairman of the EU group, Jean-Claude Younker had admitted in October 2010 (please read
here) Germany knew about the fiscal problems of Greece all along, but continued to lend her billions of euros with high interest rates, plunging her deeper into debt, in order to sell us its “tilting” submarines and other products for SIEMENS investments, with generous kickbacks, etc., etc.
Unfortunately, the Greek workers and pensioners, who mostly suffer due to the unprecedented austerity measures, cannot do much about changing the mentality and immorality of their governments. Nor is there any reliable alternative solution to choose from in the next elections. This is the Greek drama - a drama however that hits mostly the poor while leaving intact the corrupt rich in our society.
As regards your second aphorism, that
"the Greek people don’t want to be governed", have you ever wondered why? Have you ever asked yourself if the adult children of villainous parents would submit to their authority and do as they are told? Of course, not!

Why should Greeks, a proud and intelligent people of great history and contribution to the world, want to be governed by corrupt and impotent politicians who are responsible for the grave situation they are in – politicians who are the puppets of short-sighted IMF, ECB and the poorly organized administration of Eurogroup?
**Why should the Greek people submit unquestionably to a government that applies an ineffective financial policy made by Troika, a policy which drives our country deeper into recession, increases national debt and plunges people into unbearable poverty, with no hope of exit in the horizon?
**Why should the Greek working class people accept without objection all the harsh and unjust austerity measures, far worse than those imposed on Ireland and Portugal, when Greek plutocracy continue not paying their taxes, under the blessings of our impotent and corrupt government?
**Why should the Greek people submit to a government that retains laws which make it difficult, if not impossible, for members of Greek Parliament and ministers of the government to be punished for their scandals, i.e., their economic crimes?
**Why should the Greek people stoically sacrifice their salaries and pensions for the sake of their country, when the 300 members of Parliament and the 48 members of their government continue lavishing on themselves extreme pay packages, spending taxpayer’s money without consideration of the grave situation their country is in?
**Why should the Greek people accept being tortured by the never ending austerity measures, when their corrupt politicians continue –
business as usual – squandering public money on unnecessary organizations and new employments, friends and briberies?
I could go on and on with endless
"whys", just to prove to you that the main problem of Greece is not the Greek people by their corrupt government and its supporters, political party sponsors, the corrupt Greek politico-economic elite, and some highly favored union leaders.
Can you do something about it, Mr. Schäuble? Instead of dictating further reductions on pensions and salaries and more increases of taxes, something that recycles recession by depriving the Greek State of tax revenues and the pension funds of vital contributions, you could insist, as a start, on reducing the number of members of the Greek Parliament from 300 to 200, something that is allowed by our Constitution, and cutting down their salaries and benefits by 70%? This will send a positive message to Greek people.
Why don’t you ever look towards that direction? Why don’t you insist that the ministers of the Greek government should not be more than 20 (they are 48 now!) and their salaries be restricted to, say, €3,000 per month? Why should they not sacrifice a little bit their high standard of living, when, due to their past and present catastrophic practices, many Greek people who lost their jobs are unable even to survive and commit suicide?
Have you ever heard of
social justice, Mr. Schäuble? It is about time to look seriously towards this direction, if you wish to secure the survival of the euro and prevent Eurozone's disintegration. I suppose you know that there are invisible hostile forces out there who are working hard against the euro and Eurozone.
